The 1950's
Social
Fallout Shelters
The FCDA instructed the public about how to prepare for a nuclear assault. The Eisenhower administration distributed information to educate the citizens about how they could protect themselves. After Nagasaki in '45 we feared Russia would in turn bomb the US. Early on the government believed that there would be enough notification and preparation time before an attack, but as tensions increased so did their fears and citizens began investing in buling fallout shelters. They were able to be built in an underground area, easy enough for citizens to "do it yourself".
The Good Housewife
The idea of a good housewife was the new morn and became an expectation in the household. Men set these slave like standards which included:
Have to dinner ready, prepare yourself before the man gets home (refresh your physical appearance) clean up any clutter, prepare the kids(if applicable) and make the house peaceful and quiet. It was wrong of the woman to greet him with any problems or complaints, she was to have respect of the tired man. She was also expected to listen, entertain and make the evening his. These standards were degrading toward woman, yet still became the normal routine in society.

This picture is a perfect representation of what we would consider to be the "stereotypical" housewife, which was normal to women in the 50's. The comment in the corner "life can be wonderful" is slightly sarcastic, but the picture is an advertisement and was used to promote what the people should be doing. |
Economic
Marshall Plan
Created by George C Marshall, it was an american program to aid erupoes economy after WWII. European nations received nearly $13 billion in aid, which initially resulted in shipments of food, staples, fuel and machinery from the United States. The Marshall Plan funding ended in 1951.
Truman Doctrine
Truman asks for $400 million to fight communism aggression in Greece and Turkey. The proposal was to assist those who needed weaponry in order to fight and break away from angry communists. He reasoned by saying these "totalitarian regimes" took over "free peoples", and they represented a threat to international peace and the national security of the United States. The last thing we wanted was to have the US affected by communism.

Political
Brinkmanship
Events to the verge of disaster in order to achieve the outcome. It occurs in international politics, foreign policy, labor relations and military strategy. This maneuver of pushing a situation with the opponent to the brink succeeds by forcing the opponent to back down and make concessions. Adolf Hitler used this strategy to rise to power.
Sputnik
The Soviet Union launched the 1st satellite on Oct 4th 1957- this made Russia #1 as far as a world power because they were first to get into space. This caused major political controversey between the U.S. and Russa, was also a factor in causing the cold war.

How did the 1950's lead to the 60's?
In the 50's we experience much politcal controversy over atomic bomb threats and many times were on the brink of war, but also we begin to see action in the civil rights movement. When African American veterans returned home from the war, they were looking for equality and we see Martin Luther King first make an appearance and present his non-violant tactics. The Rosa Parks bus incident happens in 1955, and into the 60's we see these activists actions paying off when Kennedy and Johnson pay mind to the matters and adress them. I would say the 50's is time of progress because we make advancements with President Eisenhower and shy away from the war scene. Elvis is also a part of the 50's, and the rock and roll scene emerges which led to rebellious teenagers and the start of teenage independence.
